ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN THE FASHION AND DESIGN INDUSTRY

Written by
Kofi Okyere Darko (K.O.D)

Designing clothes for a living sounds like every fashionista’s dream job. But being a successful fashion entrepreneur goes beyond having great creative skills and involves a lot more work.

On the 20th of August, 2020, the in house experts of the BlueCrest School of Fashion and Design hosted a webinar to give insight on Entrepreneurship in the Fashion & Design Industry. We were privileged to have onboard Media Expert and Fashion Designer, Kofi Okyere Darko, popularly known as KOD.

When it comes to fashion, “KOD” is a widely known name in every Ghanaian household and beyond. He successfully owns and runs his clothing line “Nineteen 57”, and also organizes an annual fashion show, “Rhythms on Da Runway”, which is well patronized by high ranking fashion designers all over the world. Mr. Kofi Okyere Darko, who describes himself as a ”360 creative person”, took us through his fashion journey and his modus operandi which has helped him attain his success.

KOD describes fashion designers as people who can bring out concepts, sketches and sew or direct people on how to sew the outfits they have envisioned. One does not necessarily have to have a “big name” to be described as a fashion designer. However, before going into entrepreneurship in the fashion and design industry you need to critically assess yourself to know if you’re cut out to work on your own or you need to work for someone. Do you have the know-how to run a company?

If yes, the next step is to make a plan on how to raise your seed money. Some people may have to work for others for some time to be able to save and eventually invest in their own businesses.

Once you have your tools and you’re ready to start your entrepreneurial journey in the fashion and design industry, start sewing for your family, and make sure they pay (very important). They need to value what you do and be ready to pay for your services. Make sure you utilize social media platforms like IG and Pinterest to display your works and always try to find creative ways of putting your brand out there and expanding.

When it comes to creativity, KOD advised people to be original in their designs. There should be a wow factor that makes people want to purchase your designs. That wow factor is what will make you stand out and have customers coming after you. He also touched on consistency in designing exceptional outfits. He never takes the quality of the fabrics he uses for granted. It’s a competitive world and in whatever you do, you have to do it well.

Talking about the challenges he faced, he stated a major challenge in the fashion and design industry is having to deal with imitations of his works or copyright issues, which are very difficult to address. However, his clothes have a signature that makes them identifiable anywhere.
